Being Scottish I have a completely mad and offbeat sense of humor. My "wait until I get back into the office" comment should be read in that light.

I think that there is a much deeper matter to consider here. Many of our people work such long hours and so hard that their social and work life gets entangled. I know from my perspective that if I only did work at work my personal life would come apart.

I think there is also a different psychological explanation, techies really enjoy neat technology and there are many examples of folks buying the latest and best because it is fun rather than it delivers real business benefits. Email is so engrained into our peoples lives and psyche that separation of work and home is impossible.

Regards

Steve

Re: European techies feel no guilt at using work time for personal tasks

Don't rush off down the same road on this one.

I agree with Steve - but the last comment threw me - there are still many of these simple and tangible wastes in our organisations that have been around for years - yet we still try to solve it by the same unsuccessful ways.

Maybe we should start asking
- How do you encourage people to stop making calls/sending emails and help them prioitise what calls they should be making in business hours - without threatening?
- How do you make people feel valued without paying them more?
- Why are woman less likely to waste time at work and then create the same reasons for everyone to follow?

There are loads of books out there with the answers but it is a bigger challenge to actually achieve results through it .... with bigger rewards.
