You ask questions on here and make the observations that some people wouldn't even dare to admit that they have in their heads. The Hot Aisle is informative, thought provoking and inspiring. This is a well deserved accolade, and only the first of many I'm certain of that!
Congratulations! I look forward to reading about an even higher rank in the not to distant future.
Best wishes
Andy
Is it possible to buy electricity for more than 3 years in advance ?
BREEAM and LEED are building standards aimed at ordinary buildings rather than Data Centers that have specific technical requirements. So for example we might find that BREEAM specifies a particular density of insulation for building roofs whilst a data center might benefit from very poor thermal insulation. LEED is similar in that it is not specific for Data Centers and might give inappropriate advice and guidance for maximizing energy efficient by being able to dump heat rather than conserve it.
PUE is specific to Data Centers and gives a reasonable approximation of the relative efficiency of the building assuming 100% utilization of the compute resource. A PUE of 2 means that each KW of plug load is matched by a wasted KW of cooling and power protection load. Often PUE is a range of values as for some data center designs, cooling load varies by time of day and season.
Try http://www.thehotaisle.com/2008/05/15/how-effic... for a pretty good explanation (if I say so myself).
Hope that helps.
